Quintessence Publishing launches new book to provide clinicians with the necessary tools for effective soft tissue management. Written by Dr. Ariel J. Raigrodski, Soft Tissue Management—The Restorative Perspective: Putting Concepts into Practice employs evidence-based principles to help restorative dentists manage the soft tissue frame, minimize trauma, and ensure a healthy and esthetic treatment outcome for patients. Dr. Raigrodski recently spoke with us about his new book.
Q: Why is it so important to look at soft tissue management from a restorative perspective?
A: Managing the soft tissue is critical for achieving a favorable clinical outcome, starting from the treatment planning phase and continuing all the way to the delivery of the definitive restoration. It is the soft tissue that creates the foundation for an esthetic and healthy restoration. In many ways, it is like the frame of a canvas, and it is where the restorative dentist, together with the other specialists on the treating team, has the opportunity to provide the patient with an excellent clinical outcome in terms of soft tissue esthetics and health. Other specialists (periodontist, oral surgeon, orthodontist) may facilitate healthy soft tissue during the procedures they perform as a prelude to the restorative therapy. It is now in the hands of restorative dentists to ensure that the health and the contours of the soft tissue are not compromised but rather enhanced during the restorative phase of therapy.
Q: How do you think this book stands out from other books on this topic?
A: Many articles and books have been written about soft tissue management from different angles. However, the goal of this book is to integrate evidence-based concepts with clinical procedures and techniques for managing the soft tissue throughout the restorative treatment sequence. Many of these procedures are described and demonstrated with clinical photos in a step-by-step manner that simplifies those concepts and procedures for the reader.
Q: What do you hope readers will gain from this book?
A: Clinicians at different levels of clinical knowledge and experience may find the information in the book valuable for managing patient care from the relatively simple clinical scenarios to the more complex ones. Soft tissue management during different phases of restorative therapy may be found in this book in the context of different types of treatment modalities such as veneers, crowns, bridges, and implant-supported restorations. This book also provides readers with current information on how to use current materials and technologies (with emphasis on the integration of CAD/CAM technologies in the dental laboratory) to facilitate restorative outcomes in terms of soft tissue management, leading to healthy, functional, and esthetic clinical outcomes.
