The Quintessence International Publishing Group is committed to sharing cutting-edge research in dental science and technology. Most recently, we completed the 2nd International Quintessence Dental Arab Conference (IQDAC), hosted by the Riyadh Colleges of Dentistry and Pharmacy on April 24-26, 2013.

Held in the capital of Saudi Arabia, IQDAC is the among the few that are hosted in the Middle East. With caries remaining a serious problem for 70 percent of Saudi children with permanent dentition, the conference stemmed from a desire to meet and exceed the high demand for global innovations in dental and oral health.

The event theme was “A New Era in the World of Dentistry” and showcased the most recent advances in the science and art of dentistry. The 2-day conference featured sessions with a panoply of world-renowned speakers on topics including minimally invasive solutions, contemporary endodontic procedures, challenging tooth prognoses, and infectious risks of implant dentistry.

New Evidence-Based Book on TMDs Available Now!

Reading time: 2 minutes

Greene-Laskin_cover-web

With the controversy surrounding the treatment of TMDs, Treatment of TMDs: Bridging the Gap Between Advances in Research and Clinical Patient Management is a welcome addition to the dental literature. Instead of advocating for a specific treatment based on clinical experience, as so many books on this subject do, Drs Greene and Laskin apply the latest scientific research to the clinical management of TMDs. By focusing on a single question—what is happening in various research areas that will be clinically applicable to the mangement of TMDs?—the authors discuss the anatomy, biochemistry, neurophysiology, and psychology of common disorders before explaining how this knowledge may apply to the diagnosis and treatment of TMD patients.

Although much of the information discovered about musculoskeletal disorders through new research tools and innovative experimental designs can be directly or indirectly applied to TMJs, many dental clinicians are unaware of this type of information because it is presented mainly in medical publications or nonclinical scientific journals. This book therefore brings the research to the reader, going one step further to explain the potential of new research for changing future patient care. Covering such clinically relevant topics as the relation of abnormal joint function to joint pathology, the prediction of treatment responsiveness, how sleep disorders affect TMJs and facial pain, the role of comorbid conditions in pain response and management, and the evolving field of pharmacotherapeutics, this book is sure to transform the way clinicians think about TMDs and how they approach TMD treatment. New Periodontal Review: A Study Guide Available Now!

Reading time: 2 minutes

2-Termeie_CoverwebIt is a feat to become certified by the American Board of Periodontology (ABP), and attaining the diplomate status shows a dedication to the specialty of periodontics and a commitment to become the best periodontist possible. The ABP Qualifying Examinations are comprehensive, difficult to prepare for, and often very overwhelming, and that is where this study guide comes in.

Dr Termeie’s own experience preparing for the ABP examinations inspired her to write a comprehensive study guide. Her book, Periodontal Review: A Study Guide, is detailed and well organized and provides prospective candidates with all the information and literature review that they need to prepare for the examinations. Set in a question/answer format, the text provides complete yet succinct, evidence-based responses to questions with references to pertinent research. Each chapter covers its topic in full, divided into sections for easy reference.

When appropriate, answers are provided as lists, tables, and with graphic design elements to aid in memorization and recall. Clinical images are also included as needed to elucidate the text. The final chapter provides sample case presentations with questions to allow the reader to prepare for the protocol portion of the examination and offers helpful advice such as when a well-supported response based on sound rationale, rather than a specific answer, is required.

This is a highly recommended resource for all those seeking certification or recertification from the ABP, or who would like to have a comprehensive reference guide in periodontology.
